Synapses at the Undergraduate Exhibition / MICA

So it has been a couple weeks since my last post and I just wanted to show what I have currently been working on. Sorry the photo is a bit weak, but I will make up for that hopefully when it's finished, right now I would say it is about sixty-five percent finished, and I just wanted to show how I am approaching this drawing, and that is a gradual transition from dark to light, I want it to slowly disintegrate as you move your eyes upwards through the composition. With this drawing I was searching for a way to bridge the gap between abstract intuitive marks and actively rendered forms. With this approach I was able to explore the act of mark making in order to emphasize the nature of a suggested form, one that is both elusive and able to tap into the surrounding negative space. I wanted some parts to be stable and able to provide a core for the drawing while other sections are left feeling more uncertain and flow freely like the marks used to create them.

So here are a few shots from the traveling show I had the privilege of being a part of. My work will be featured along with other fellow MICA students, as well as work from the students of Kansas City Art Institute, and the Minneapolis College of Art. The show has been traveling to each school on a three month long tour. Sorry the photographs have a bit of a glare on them from the glass.

Watercolor on Arches

Here is a illustration I have been working on describing the gryphons that appear in Oscar Wilde's The Fisherman and His Soul. I plan on transferring this drawing lightly on watercolor paper so that I may incorporate washes and hopefully enhance the mood of the piece. Should start adding color later on today, depends on how reliable the printer will be.
